TOP PROSPECT WILL SIGN WITH ST. JOHN'S

One of the state's top college basketball prospects, guard Tarik Turner from Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, pulled a surprise Tuesday when he announced he will sign a letter-of-intent with St. John's.

Turner, whose home is in Charlottesville, was favoring Syracuse and California as late as last month.

"At first I wasn't that interested in St. John's," Turner said, "but even before I visited there last weekend, they had started to come on."

Turner, who canceled a visit to Ohio State, transferred to Oak Hill this year from St. John's in Frederick, Md., where he averaged 14 points. At 6 feet 5, he will play point guard for Oak Hill after spending his junior year at small forward.
