MUSSER NOT LEAVING REVENUE-CHIEF RACE

Roanoke City Councilman Howard Musser will stay in the race for city commissioner of revenue despite being hospitalized several weeks after a stroke.

There had been speculation that Musser might withdraw.

But he plans to resume his campaign soon after recovering from the stroke he suffered in late August.

Musser, who is running as an independent, has been assured that he can perform the duties of the office by Jan. 1, when he would take office, a spokesman said.

Marsha Fielder, Musser's Democratic opponent, said she has been running her campaign under the assumption that Musser would remain in the race.

There is no Republican candidate. Jerome Howard, the GOP incumbent, is retiring after 28 years in the post.
