WHAT A TREAT! HOLIDAY OBSERVED ON SATURDAY

Halloween will come early this year in Roanoke. One day early, that is.

Because Halloween falls on a Sunday this year, City Council has decided that the observance of trick or treat should be on Saturday, Oct. 30.

The official hours will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Vinton and Roanoke County have made similar decisions, but Salem has taken no action.

Some parents do not like their children to be out on Sunday night.

The last time Halloween fell on a Sunday, in 1982, the Roanoke Valley governments shifted the observance to Saturday night.

City Manager Bob Herbert said that by moving the observance to Saturday, the city is eliminating the confusion that could result if localities have different dates.
