COUNCIL MEASURE PRAISES MCCOMAS

Town Council passed a resolution Tuesday praising James McComas for his strong leadership as Virginia Tech's president.

McComas who joined Tech in 1988, stepped down as president after being diagnosed with colon cancer last month.

The resolution cited McComas' support of the proposed "smart road" from I-81 to Blacksburg and his role in the creation of Blacksburg's Electronic Village.

Council also unanimously passed a resolution expressing concern over proposed cuts to higher education and another supporting the $1.885 million bond referendum to fund improvements to the Blacksburg branch of the regional library.

The new library was the topic of a council work session following the meeting.

A number of Blacksburg's committees have landscaping ideas for the two-acre site at Clay and Draper streets, so Mayor Roger Hedgepeth called the meeting to discuss them.

The only decision made Tuesday, though, was to do nothing until after the bond vote in November.

Then, if the bond is approved, the town will have to find space for about 140 parking places - 90 for the library and 50 for the town - and also figure out how to include the Huckleberry Trail in the site plan.

The Bikeways and Sidewalks committee would like to see a 40-foot wide extension of the trail across the property, but Hedgepeth said the parcel's small size limits the town's options.

"Eventually we will try to come up with some optimum solution," he said.
