POLICE SAY MAN USED COMPUTER TO ASK FOR SEX

His handle on a San Jose-based computer bulletin board was "Thieves" and he struck up conversations with several young boys, telling them he was 24 or 34.

But it was other things the 50-year-old Menlo Park, Calif., father allegedly said on line to children that caught the attention of the board operator and, ultimately, of police.

Donnell Howard Hughes now is awaiting a San Jose Municipal Court hearing on charge of attempted child molestation for allegedly using the computer bulletin board as a way to ask a 13-year-old boy to meet him for sex. He has pleaded not guilty.

Police kept the 13-year-old boy's appointment and met Hughes on June 22 in the parking lot at Vallco Fashion Park in Cupertino, where he was arrested. - Knight-Ridder/Tribune
