McCloud fired a 1-over-par 72 at the 5,814-yard Tazewell County Country Club, edging Brian Leaman of Marion by two strokes for the low round of the day.
Blacksburg and Christiansburg finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the team competition.
The state tournament will be held in Marion.
In other high school sports:
Matt Anderson shot a 72 and teammate Philip Payne shot a 73 to lead Halifax County to victory at the Northwestern Region golf tournament at Carper's Valley Golf Club in Winchester. The Comets finished at 305 on the par-70 course. Fauquier finished 14 shots back at 319, followed by Cave Spring (323), Stonewall Jackson (335) and Patrick Henry (344).
Halifax County and Fauquier advance to the Group AAA state tournament.
In individual play, Doug Kenney of Cave Spring shot a 74 to qualify for state tournament play. He will be joined by Ryan Gewniak of Stafford, Mike Weddle of Albemarle, Robert O'Brien of E.C. Glass, Chris Reed of Heritage and Paul Daly of GW-Danville.
The state tournament will be held Monday and Tuesday at Greens Folly Golf Course in South Boston.
David Williams of Blacksburg and Jennifer Pohlig of Pulaski County were the individual winners of a cross country meet in Pulaski. Williams ran the 3.1-mile course in 17:07 and Pohlig finished in 20:07.
Jason Alexander of George Wythe and Trish Nervo of Glenvar set course records in a cross country meet at Camp Alta Mons in Crockett Springs. Alexander covered the 3.25-mile course in 16:37, shaving 25 seconds off the previous record. Nervo was timed in 20:23.
Casey Motley of Salem and Briana Grace of William Byrd were the individual winners of a cross country meet held at the Baptist Home in Salem. Motley covered the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 21 seconds and Grace was timed in 22:18. Salem beat William Byrd 23-32 in the boys' competition and William Byrd won the girls' division 15-50.
