OBIT JOHNSON, JOHNNY HOLIDAY
JOHNSON, Johnny Holiday, 86, died Tuesday, October 12, 1993. He was the
former Roanoke City Treasurer. He was born in Halifax County, March 31, 1907,
a son of John Henry Johnson and Ella Dixon Johnson. His father was a prominent
farmer in Halifax. He was the last of 12 brothers and sisters. He was a member
of Calvary Baptist Church and a member of the DeLong Bible Class. Mr. Johnson
graduated from Hargrave Military Academy, and National Business College. He
was employed by the law firm Poindexter & Poindexter from 1931 to 1934. He
left to become Deputy City Treasurer from 1934 to 1944. He resigned to go into
private business. He was store managers of Southern States Cooperative,
Tri-City Cooperative in Tenn. and Purina Feed Store in Roanoke. He returned to
public office in 1952 as Deputy Commissioner of Revenue and Licensed
Inspector. He was elected Roanoke City Treasurer in 1953, and was re-elected
to six successive terms. He retired in 1977 at age 70. Mr. Johnson was
president of the Treasurer's Association of Virginia in 1959, was chosen
treasurer of the year by the Association in 1976. He was a charter member of
the Board of Directors of Blue Ridge ETV Association, Inc. He was a former
member of Lions Club, the Optimest Club, charter member of Mens Garden Club, a
member of Elks Lodge #194. He is survived by his wife, Alva Via Johnson; son,
Thomas Via Johnson; daughter-in-law, Peggie Cameron Johnson; granddaughter,
Dawn Michelle Johnson, all of Roanoke; a number of nieces; and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, noon Friday. The Rev.
M. Dennis Herman and Dr. Harry Y. Gamble will officiate. The family will
receive friends at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
Interment will be in Evergreen Burial Park. The family suggests memorial gifts
can be made to Calvary Baptist Church or a favorite charity.
