ROANOKE RESERVE UNIT GETS NEW COMMANDER

Brig. Gen. Max Guggenheimer Jr., a Lynchburg Army Reserve officer, has assumed command of the 80th Training Division. He replaces Maj. Gen. Stephen H. Sewell Jr. of Roanoke.

A 1960 graduate of VMI, Guggenheimer served nine years active duty which included assignments in Berlin, the Dominican Republic and Vietman, where he was an advisor to the Vietnamese Rangers. He transferred to the Army Reserve and has commanded 80th Division units in Lynchburg, Salem and Fort Lee. He is director of human resources for English Construction Company in Altavista.

Sewell, president of Sewell Products Inc. in Salem, is retiring after 24 years of service. A graduate of Virginia Military Institute, Sewell served two years active duty before transferring to the Army Reserve in 1961. He has been with the 80th division since 1963 and has served as division commander since 1989. He also served as deputy division commander.
