OBIT PHILLIPS, BETTY ANNE ST. JOHN DEATON
PHILLIPS, Betty Anne St. John Deaton, 63, of 2213 Lee Highway, Pulaski,
died Wednesday evening, October 13, 1993, in the Pulaski Community Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Grace Marie St. John and
Garland Newberry St. John of Chilhowie and husband, Ralph William Deaton,
Pulaski. Mrs. Phillips was the weekday religious education teacher in Radford
for 2 years and later the director of Christian Education of Grove Avenue
Methodist Church in Radford. She has been the administrative assistant of the
First United Methodist Church in Pulaski since 1976. She taught Sunday School
for many years and was a leader in the evangelism and education work areas of
the church. She was a member of various clubs in the Pulaski area. Mrs.
Phillips' faith and joy of life changed the lives of many of her friends,
adding new depth and perspective. She demonstrated that each person can make a
profound difference in the lives of others and believed the truth and wisdom
in the words, "We are out brother's keeper." Surviving are husband, Lonnie D.
Phillips, Pulaski; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Forrest Garrison,
Chattanooga, Tenn.; two sons and daughters-in-law, John Edward and Dina
Deaton, Atlanta, Ga., James Byron and Laura Deaton, Atlanta, Ga.; one
grandson. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. from the First
United Methodist Church, Pulaski with the Rev. Jack Weikel and the Rev. Ty
Harrison officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery,
Chilhowie. Visiting will be Friday at Stevens Funeral Home where the family
will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made
to the First United Methodist Church of Pulaski for the Family Life Center or
to the American Cancer Society, c/o Gayle Long, 361 Longview Court, Pulaski,
