J.M. Turner & Co. moves downtown

J.M. Turner & Co., which invested $475,000 on renovation of a former savings and loan office for its new headquarters, was officially welcomed to downtown Roanoke on Friday. The Turner company, a general contractor, moved its headquarters from Electric Road in Salem.

The company added 15 employees to the downtown work force, according to Douglas Waters, president of Downtown Roanoke Inc.

J.M. Turner purchased the building from Resolution Trust Corp. after Investors Savings Bank closed. The company occupies both floors of the building at 130 Church Ave. S.W.

Bassett Furniture to work with Zenith

Bassett Furniture Industries Inc., based in Henry County, and Zenith Electronics Corp. said they will develop a line of integrated home theater furniture systems.

At the heart of the systems will be Zenith's 32- and 35-inch direct-view sets and giant-screen, rear-projection models with Dolby surround sound. Bassett is designing home theater furniture pieces to complement the TVs.

Giant-screen home theater systems will be built around Zenith's "Slim-Profile" rear-projection TV technology.

Bassett is one of the world's largest makers of home furnishings with 46 plants in 16 states, and with annual sales of about $500 million.

AEP takes a 4th in efficiency ratings

American Electric Power, parent of Roanoke's Appalachian Power Co., placed fourth in a ranking of utilities operating the most efficient coal-fired electricity generating plants.

The ranking, by Electric Light & Power, a trade journal, said Duke Power Co. of Charlotte, N.C., has the most efficient system among the nation's top 100 investor-owned utilities. - Staff report Briefly . . .

\ Chesapeake Packaging Co.'s Roanoke division has been recommended for ISO 9001 certification, which indicates the ability to meet quality expectations of international customers. The certification comes from Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance Ltd. after an audit of the operations.

\ Fieldcrest Cannon Inc., an Eden, N.C.-based textile and carpet maker operating a towel mill in Henry County, on Friday extended its cash tender offer for all outstanding shares of common stock and Class B common stock of Amoskeag Co. The offer and withdrawal rights will now expire on Nov. 16, pending review by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

\ Commonwealth Gas Service was told Friday by the State Corporation Commission to pay refunds to customers, but was not ordered to reduce rates. How big the refund will be is still unclear, SCC spokesman Ken Schrad said. Once actual refunds are calculated, they will be reflected as a credit on customers' October or November bills.
