Ray A. Toney, 34, was found hanging from a bedsheet in his cell shortly after 3 a.m.
When jailers checked on him about a half hour earlier, he had been lying on a cot.
"There was nothing to indicate that he was suicidal," said Sheriff W.Q. Overton.
Toney apparently affixed his bedsheet to some pipes that ran across the top of his cell.
Toney was arrested around 10 p.m. Thursday after giving a statement to Sheriff's Investigator Bonnie Beatty.
Overton declined to give details, but said the statement and an investigation gave authorities "probable cause" to obtain a warrant.
Toney was being held in lieu of a $10,000 bond.
The alleged molestation of the child took place over the past two years, Beatty said.
"I picked up on no indicators that he was going to commit suicide," Beatty said.
Overton said jailers unsuccessfully tried to revive Toney, who worked as a laborer at a Rocky Mount factory.
