MUSSER TRAILING IN SPENDING

Democrat Marsha Fielder has spent $16,384 in her campaign to become Roanoke's next commissioner of revenue while her opponent, Councilman Howard Musser, has spent $508.

Fielder has also raised four times as much in campaign contributions as Musser, who is running as an independent. She has received $17,263 in contributions, and Musser, $4,610, according to campaign finance reports filed Friday.

Musser, who has been hospitalized for several weeks recovering from a stroke, is preparing to resume his campaign.

Labor unions have contributed heavily to Fielder's campaign. The Virginia State AFL-CIO has donated $1,100. Contributions have also come from the International Brotherhood of Teamsters and other unions.

Fielder has received nearly two dozen contributions of more than $100. Her contributors include Dels. Victor Thomas and Clifton Woodrum, $250 each.

Musser has received only three contributions over $100. They were from George Cartledge, chairman of Grand Piano, $250; John Hancock, director of Roanoke Electric Steel, $250; and Garnett Smith, president of Advance Auto, $200.
