FIELDALE-COLLINSVILLE AVENGES EARLY SETBACK

T.J. Hayes scored 19 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as Fieldale-Collinsville avenged a 23-point loss to Magna Vista a month earlier with a 60-52 Piedmont District girls' basketball victory Thursday night.

The Warriors (12-3 overall, 9-3 in the district) cut their deficit to two points midway through the fourth quarter, but the Cavaliers (6-8, 5-7) held on for the upset victory.

Alleghany 55

COVINGTON - Heather Moore scored 25 points, including seven in a big second quarter, as the Spartans turned back the Mountaineers in a Blue Ridge District game.

Shelly Johnson added 19 and Tina Slate had 12 for Salem (10-4, 3-1).

Alleghany, which failed to convert inside opportunities, was led by Nicole Curtis, Tricia Rice and Andrea Moore. Each scored 14 points for the Mountaineers (9-5, 1-3). \

Bland 41

The Spartans rallied from a 10-point deficit behind Heather Matlock and Tamika Saunders as they defeated the Rockets in the Mountain Empire District.

Matlock scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half and Saunders scored 10 of her 14 after intermission for Giles.

Rachel French scored a game-high 24 points for Bland and Pachess Umbarger added 11. \

Grayson County 50

Rebecca Click's three-point play with 34 seconds to play - her only points of the game - broke a tie and gave the Eagles a Mountain Empire District victory over the Blue Devils.

Freshman Amanda Clark scored a game- and career-high 19 points and Christie Whitt added 16 for Rocky Gap (8-7, 7-5). Holly Boone came off the bench to make nine steals and Crystal Kidd grabbed 11 rebounds.

Tia Stuart had 16 points and Catie Satterwhite added 15 for Grayson County (1-11, 1-11). \

Covington 40

BUENA VISTA - Crystal Humphries scored 12 of her 18 points in the second half to spark the Fighting Blues to a Pioneer District victory over the Cougars.

Missi Snider added 14 points and Carrie Coleman had 10 for Parry McCluer (7-6, 4-3).

Michelle Jeter scored 10 points to lead Covington (4-9, 4-3). \

Amy Cornett scored 19 points for Holston (5-9, 3-7). Stacy Green led George Wythe (4-10, 2-8) with 16. \

LEBANON - Beth Ketner scored 16 points as the Indians, ranked fifth in Timesland, whipped the Pioneers in a Hogoheegee District game.

Rural Retreat (14-0, 11-0) trailed 7-6 after one quarter, but put together strong second and third quarters to stay undefeated. Lebanon is 3-13 and 2-9.

CHATHAM - Tanesha Hairston scored nine of her 16 points in the fourth quarter and Toy Perkins added seven in the period as the Lancers rallied past the Cavaliers in the Piedmont District.

Torsheda Dillard, who led Laurel Park (9-5, 8-4) with 22 points, hit 14 of 17 shots from the free throw line as the Landers outscored Chatham 23-9 in the final quarter. The Cavaliers were led by Jion Word with a game-high 23 points.
