LORD BOTETOURT DEFENSE STOPS COVINGTON 29-21

Lord Botetourt's defense came up with a big stop on the final play of the game as the Cavaliers held off Covington 29-21 on Friday night in a non-district high school football game.

After Lord Botetourt took an eight-point lead on Chad Sayers' 4-yard run and a two-point conversion run by Chris Deweese, Covington returned the kickoff to its 22-yard line.

The Cougars drove down the field and had a first-and-goal situation at the Cavaliers' 9-yard line with 10 seconds to go, but they were out of timeouts. That would prove to be crucial.

Quarterback Mike Barber rolled right on the next play, looking for a receiver. He appeared to have a clear path to the end zone, but Botetourt's defense stopped him at the 3-yard line and time ran out.

Deweese threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Cronise in the first quarter and added two two-point conversion runs for the Cavaliers (5-1). He attempted nine passes and completed five - all to Cronise - for 78 yards with no interceptions. Botetourt committed no turnovers.

Randy Lark led the Cavaliers' ground game with 91 yards on nine carries, including a 51-yard touchdown run.

Barber was 10-of-20 for 120 yards with one interception. Covington's touchdown pass came on a 34-yard halfback-option throw from Stacy Bishop to Andy Lambert.

Tom Luckett rushed for 118 yards on 23 carries to lead the Cougars (0-6).

COLLINSVILLE - Todd Johnson threw three touchdown passes to McQuail Gravely as the Bulldogs (6-0, 5-0) routed the Cavaliers (2-4, 2-3) in a Piedmont District game. Gravely caught six passes for 102 yards for Martinsville, which is ranked No. 3 in Group AA.

Fieldale-Collinsville cranked up its own passing attack as quarterback Brian Alley threw two touchdown passes to Delvin Joyce. Joyce also had two interceptions. However, the highlight for the Cavaliers was a 52-yard interception return by Carson Shearer. \

Greenbrier East, W.Va. 42

Alleghany 13

FAIRLEA, W.Va. - Justin White scored three touchdowns for Greenbrier East (3-4), and the visiting Mountaineers (4-2) turned over the ball five times in the non-district rout.

Greenbrier East led 21-13 at halftime, behind two touchdowns from White.

Alleghany couldn't hold onto the ball in either half, though, and saw its chances of winning disappear. \
