TODAY'S TOPIC: TRUCKERS' SPEED LIMITS

What will be done by the candidates, if they are elected, about the truckers' 55 mph speed limit? [Some] police seem to think that it would be better if truckers were going 65 mph. A lot of truckers are concerned. When you have some vehicles going one speed and another going at another speed, it is very dangerous.

- Robert Brown, Salem.

Mary Sue Terry:

"Until I see data that more conclusively indicates that a higher speed limit is safer, I'll have to go with my common sense that the speed limit for trucks should remain 55."

George Allen:

"Studies and common sense indicate that it is safer to have vehicles traveling at the same speed. Speed differentials cause more lane-shifting and interactions and, as a result, more accidents. For that reason, I support uniform 65 mph speed limits for cars and trucks on rural interstates.

"Overweight and poorly maintained trucks are a key factor in many accidents. Truck weight enforcement has been one of the lowest priority programs identified within the Department of State Police. In my administration, I will place greater emphasis on truck inspection by increasing the number of state police assigned to inspections."
