An injury to the collarbone area forced McClellan from the game shortly thereafter, and he did not return to the Cavaliers' sideline for the second half.
Coach George Welsh said McClellan may have suffered a fracture, which could end his UVa career. McClellan, one of the Cavaliers' co-captains, is a fifth-year senior in his third season as a starter.
UVa's other starting cornerback, junior Carl Smith, suffered cramps and also had to come out of the game. As a result, the Cavaliers were forced to play much of the second half with backup corners Joe Crocker and Joe Rowe.
Rowe missed a tackle on Florida State's only second-half touchdown in a 40-14 victory.
Welsh said Virginia was in zone coverage when Tamarick Vanover streaked by McClellan for the 86-yard touchdown pass that was the longest of quarterback Charlie Ward's career.
\ TIMEOUTS: Virginia had one timeout remaining when the first half ended, but the Cavaliers failed to stop the clock after reaching the Seminoles' 14-yard line.
"I wanted to save one so we could get the field-goal team on the field," Welsh said. "I couldn't believe the clock ran down.
"There was 10 seconds to go and [quarterback Symmion Willis] was sacked right away. And then he jumped up and signaled time out. I was told when he went down there was four seconds on the clock. I don't know how it got to zero."
\ INTERCEPTIONS: Virginia, leading the ACC in interceptions with 13, failed to pick off a pass for the first time in eight games. Corey Sawyer had the lone interception for Florida State and kept alive his streak of 10 interceptions without any return yardage.
\ BIG PAYDAY: The ACC treasury swelled by $1.4 million from the national telecasts of the North Carolina-Georgia Tech game by ABC and Virginia-Florida State by ESPN.
That does not count approximately $200,000 the conference gets from Jefferson-Pilot for the Clemson-Wake Forest game that was part of the weekly ACC package.
\ NEXT WEEK: The Cavaliers (5-1 overall, 3-1 ACC) face North Carolina (7-1, 4-1) at 1 p.m. at Scott Stadium, although the game time could be changed for TV purposes. After losing his first five games against Virginia, North Carolina coach Mack Brown saw the Tar Heels defeat UVa 27-7 last year.
