MAROONS WIN 2-0 IN SOCCER

Dustin Fonder scored two late goals as host Roanoke clinched the top seed in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's soccer tournament by beating defending champion Virginia Wesleyan 2-0 on Saturday.

The Maroons (14-2 overall, 7-1 ODAC) set a school record for victories in a season, surpassing the 1984 squad. Fonder has 17 goals this season for Roanoke, which is No. 12 in the latest NCAA Division III poll.

Virginia Wesleyan's record slipped to 12-2-1, 4-2.

In other soccer:

Robin McLaughlin scored three goals, setting the school's career record, as host Roanoke (8-5-1)breezed past Greensboro 5-0 in a non-conference women's game. McLaughlin has 40 goals in her career, three more than Hallie Stephenson's mark set in 1990.
