HAMPDEN-SYDNEY KEEPS GENERALS WINLESS 28-20

Cetric Gayles rushed for four touchdowns Saturday, including one in the final 53 seconds, as Hampden-Sydney beat Washington and Lee 28-20 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Gayles had three touchdown runs of 1 yard and one 9-yard scoring run for the Tigers (4-2 overall, 3-1 ODAC) while rushing for 142 yards.

With Hampden-Sydney leading 21-10, Washington and Lee (0-5, 0-3) scored with 3:49 remaining in the third quarter on Brooks Fischer's 34-yard pass to Jake Kimball. The Generals' Drew Thomas added a 31-yard field goal with 13:25 left as Washington and Lee closed the gap to 21-20 before Gayles' final touchdown.

\ Randolph-Macon 20

Emory & Henry 6

ASHLAND - Quarterback Andy Bush ran 21 times for 70 yards including an 8-yard touchdown as Randolph-Macon defeated Emory & Henry in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

The game marked the first victory for Randolph-Macon (3-2-1, 2-0) over Emory & Henry (5-2, 3-1) since 1989. Randolph-Macon's Garry Carter set a school and career record for most pass receptions (115) with four catches for 43 yards. The previous record was 112.

Randolph-Macon scored twice in 27 seconds in the first quarter on a 14-yard blocked punt return by Dwayne Elmore and a 41-yard interception return by Avery Farmer.

Emory & Henry's John Ely scored on a 7-yard pass from Eric Montgomery with less than three minutes remaining in the game. Montgomery completed 11 of 22 passes for 130 yards but was hampered by three interceptions. \

James Madison 45

New Hampshire 21

HARRISONBURG - Mike Cawley threw for 320 yards and three touchdowns as the Dukes beat New Hampshire in the Yankee Conference.

James Madison (4-3, 2-2) took control in the first quarter on touchdown runs of 5 and 9 yards by Rhadshaun Miles and Steve Agee. The Dukes led 24-0 at the half after an 85-yard pass from Cawley to David McLeod and Trey Weis' 46-yard field goal.

By the end of the third quarter, the score was 38-0 on a pair of 3-yard scoring passes from Cawley to Ryan Anderson and Agee.

Cawley completed 18 of 24 passes. Agee rushed for 56 yards on 11 carries and caught two passes for 12 yards. McLeod caught nine passes for 187 yards.

\ William and Mary 53

Northeastern 6

BOSTON - Shawn Knight threw five touchdown passes to lead the Tribe over Northeastern.

Knight, who leads the Yankee Conference in passing efficiency, hit on 10-of-13 passes for 169 yards for William and Mary (4-2, 2-1).

Clarzell Pearl of Northeastern (1-5, 1-3) was sacked for a safety by Craig Staub on his team's second possession and threw two interceptions that led to scores for William and Mary.

Derek Fitzgerald, who carried 14 times for 110 yards, scored on a 3-yard run and Michael Tomlin and Corey Ludwig caught two touchdowns apiece as the visitors built a 39-0 halftime lead.

Knight, sidelined with a back injury during both of William and Mary's losses this season, played less than four minutes of the second half.

Ludwig, whose three receptions all went for touchdowns, added a 15-yard score in the second half. He has caught a pass in 28 consecutive games. \

Boston U. 44

Richmond 14

RICHMOND - Robert Dougherty threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, and the Terriers scored 27 points on turnovers to beat the Spiders in the Yankee Conference.

The Terriers (6-0, 4-0) are off to their best start since 1949. Boston, ranked No. 18 in Division I-AA, has won eight consecutive games for a school record. No. 14 Richmond dropped to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in conference.

After Mike Morello hit a 39-yard field goal on the Terriers' first possession, Richmond took a 7-3 lead on a 26-yard pass from Greg Lilly to Rod Boothes.

Late in the first quarter, the Terriers began a drive at Richmond's 49-yard line following a punt. Dougherty completed three passes including a 26-yard touchdown pass to Jason Andrade. On the Terriers' next possession, they drove 64 yards in five plays capped by a 33-yard touchdown run by Zach Burwell.

Following an interception of a Lilly pass, the Terriers again drove for a touchdown with Dougherty scoring on a 7-yard quarterback draw play. Lilly was then intercepted for the third time in the half, and the Terriers' settled for a 30-yard Morello field goal with 15 seconds remaining in the half.

In the second half, the Spiders lost five fumbles, three of which led to Terrier scores.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Tamron Smith ran for 150 yards on 17 carries to lead the Penguins to victory over the Flames.

In the first quarter, Smith ran for 19 yards on an interception thrown by Travis Wilemon to make the score 14-0.

The Penguins (5-1 overall) had moved out in front 7-0 when Reggie Scurry blocked a punt and Corey Scarlato picked it up to run for 16 yards. Darnell Clark ended first-quarter scoring with a 56-yard run in a sustained drive to make it 21-0.

A six-yard run by Mark Brungard in the second quarter gave the Penguins a 28-0 lead over the Flames (3-4).

Smith, with 4,008 yards, is the only Youngstown State player to rush for over 4,000 yards in a career.

\ Other games

\ Bridgewater 28, Guilford 25: At Bridgewater, Ronnie Howard scored three touchdowns and ran for 243 yards on 30 carries as the Eagles won in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Howard scored on runs of 69, 65 and 1 yard as Bridgewater (2-4, 1-2 ODAC) outgained Guilford (1-5, 0-2) 306 yards to 294 yards. Jeff Hatch gained 220 yards on 41 carries for Guilford.

Guilford led 17-0 in the second quarter but Bridgewater went on to score 28 points in a row by the middle of the fourth quarter.

\ New Haven 71, Virginia Union 28: At New Haven, Conn., James Weir threw for 319 yards and six touchdowns as New Haven, ranked No. 2 in Division I-AA, rolled over the Panthers.

Weir completed 18 of 26 passes for New Haven (6-0). The quarterback has thrown for 1,366 yards and 18 touchdowns this season. Tony Willis caught eight of those passes against Virginia Union (2-4-1) for 173 yards and three scores.

The Chargers also got 158 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries from Roger Graham.

Virginia Union quarterback Don Ruffin was equally impressive, completing 18-of-35 for 320 yards and four scores. But the Chargers defense sacked Ruffin five times for losses of 27 yards. Bobby Phillips led the Panther ground game with 216 yards on 37 carries.

\ Hampton U. 48, Norfolk St. 21: At Norfolk, Antonio Harvey scored three touchdowns as the Pirates (7-0, 6-0) defeated the Spartans in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Between the two teams, there were 40 penalties. Norfolk State (2-4-1, 1-4-1 CIAA) set a school record for penalties in a game with 27, and penalty yardage, with 273 yards.

\ Virginia St. 44, Fayetteville St. 6: At Ettrick, Anthony Hughes ran for three touchdowns and Gregory Clark completed 28 of 36 passes for 386 yards Saturday as the Trojans defeated Fayetteville State in the CIAA.

Virginia State (6-1) scored three times in the first quarter with Hughes making the first touchdown run early in the game on a 27-yard pass from Clark.

\ Newport News 35, Salisbury 21: At Newport News, sophomore Jermaine Bellamy ran for 133 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Builders to victory.

Bellamy ran for 10 yards to score the first of two touchdowns in the first quarter. By the end of the second quarter, Newport News (4-2-1) led the Seagulls 21-0.

\ Clinch Valley 29, Maryville, Tenn. 10: At Wise, Durmia Marshall gained 130 yards on 12 carries as Clinch Valley defeated Maryville. In addition to Marshall's yardage, Greg Thomas had 129 yards on 20 carries. It was the first time in school history two players have rushed for more than 100 yards in a game. Clinch Valley (3-3) overwhelmed Maryville (3-3) with 394 yards in total offense.
