NO. 1 SEMINOLES, NO. 2 IRISH HEAD FOR A SHOWDOWN

Florida State and Notre Dame are heading toward a 1-2 showdown in college football.

Because of Alabama's 17-17 tie against Tennessee, Notre Dame moved up to No. 2 in this week's Associated Press media poll. The Fighting Irish play No. 1 Florida State in South Bend, Ind., on Nov. 13.

If they maintain their rankings until then, it will be the first regular-season matchup between the top Poll in Scoreboard. B4 two teams since No. 2 Miami beat No. 1 Florida State 17-16 on Nov. 16, 1991. Second-ranked Alabama defeated No. 1 Miami 34-13 in the 1993 Sugar Bowl.

Florida State has been No. 1 all season, but the Seminoles were a unanimous pick for the first time Sunday. They received all 62 first-place votes after defeating previously unbeaten Virginia 40-14.

Notre Dame rose one spot after beating Brigham Young 45-20, and Ohio State climbed two places to No. 3 after a 28-21 victory over Michigan State.

Alabama fell from No. 2 to No. 4 after Tennessee halted the Tide's 28-game winning streak. Nebraska rose one notch to No. 5 after beating Kansas State 45-28, idle Miami jumped two spots to No. 6 and Arizona moved up four places to No. 7 with a 27-24 win over Stanford.

Tennessee went from No. 10 to No. 8, and Florida fell five places to No. 9 after losing 38-35 to Auburn, which jumped nine spots to No. 10.

Texas A&M is 11th, followed by North Carolina, Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin, Colorado, Oklahoma, West Virginia, UCLA, Louisville, Virginia, Washington, Syracuse, Michigan State and Washington State.

Virginia fell six spots to No. 21, and Washington fell 10 places to No. 22 after losing to UCLA 39-25.

\ SCUFFLES: Virginia Tech's Mike Bianchin and Temple's James Spears were ejected in the fourth quarter Saturday when they squared off after Tech quarterback Jim Druckenmiller threw a touchdown pass to Bryan Still. Bianchin said Spears punched him and said he didn't retaliate.

Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer was most furious with fullback Joe Swarm, whom Beamer thought was leaving the bench to join the fight - a prohibited move after Tech's benches-clearing brawl with Maryland on Sept. 25. Beamer spent several minutes railing at Swarm, who is on Tech's extra-point team.

"I owe Joe an apology," Beamer said afterward. "Joe said he was running out to kick the extra point."

Beamer was asked if Swarm would have suffered punishment if he had been fighting.

"You mean after I choked him?" Beamer said, smiling.

\ ALL BETS OFF: Las Vegas did not place odds on the Virginia Tech-Temple game. Sources familiar with Vegas oddsmaking indicate the Owls, one of Division I-A's lowest-rated teams, have been declared "non-competitive," and their games probably will be off the betting board for the rest of this season.
