VIOLENCE REPORTED IN COAL MINE PROTEST

Violence broke out during a protest staged by striking union coal miners near a nonunion mine in southwestern Pennsylvania, and one miner was slightly injured.

Some 18,000 United Mine Workers members in seven states, including Virginia, have been on a gradually expanding selective strike since May 10 against the Bituminous Coal Operators Association, an industry contract bargaining group.

The injured man was struck by marbles fired from a slingshot, troopers said. Police did not say if he was a union member. Objects also were thrown at vehicles, tires were punctured, and vehicle windows were broken, they said.
