WATCH KIDS' COSTUMES, SCHOOL OFFICIALS ASK

Witches, devils and hobos are no-nos, according to school officials who want trick-or-treaters to avoid wearing certain costumes.

In a recent letter to parents, the Iowa City School District Equity-Affirmative Action Advisory Committee suggested they should be mindful of their children's costumes "to avoid unpleasant and hurtful situations."

It offered a list of costumes that could present negative images during trick-or-treating or at parties, including gypsy, American Indian princess, African, witch, an elderly person, a disabled person, East Indian, slave, hobo and devil.

Janet Rudolph, president of the Coralville Central Elementary Parent-Teacher Organization, said she hoped parents would take the note seriously. "People do need to be sensitive to feelings of others," she said. - Associated Press
