ROANOKE VALLEY ECONOMIC INDICATORS

The Consumer Price Index was virtually unchanged between August and September. The index is the nation's primary measure of inflation.

The September index stood at 145.1 points compared to August's 144.8.

That's a difference of 0.2 percent, which the government counted as a zero-percent increase in the cost of living, based on retail prices.

A year ago, the index stood at 141.3 points, meaning there was a 2.7 percent jump for the 12 months.

That means that a basket of goods and services that cost $141.30 a year ago was up to $145.10 last month.

Inflation for the year to date is running at an annual rate of 2.5 percent.
