PETERSBURG TRIES AGAIN FOR MORE TORNADO RELIEF

City officials have made another pitch to congressmen and federal agencies for more aid to help the city recover from an Aug. 6 tornado.

"We really are up to here with technical assistance. We need money," City Manager Valerie Lemmie told John Beale of the Department of Housing and Urban Development during a meeting Monday in Washington.

So far, the only form of federal assistance to come to the city has been Small Business Association loans to business owners who were uninsured or underinsured.

Mayor Rosalyn Dance said the city needs $8 million to $10 million to pay for cleanup, to begin rebuilding the historic district, to revitalize business and to keep the city budget out of the red.

The city has a $500,000 shortfall as a result of overtime, debris removal and landfilling after the tornado, Lemmie said. But some bills from the cleanup project have not yet arrived, she said.
