RURAL SCHOOLS TO GET THEIR DAY IN COURT

The Virginia Supreme Court has agreed to hear the appeal of 31 mostly rural school systems that filed a lawsuit to gain more educational funding from the state.

The Coalition for Equity in Educational Funding Corporation's appeal of a Richmond Circuit Court decision was granted Oct. 12 by the state's highest court.

Kenneth Walker of Halifax, coalition chairman, said he anticipates the court will hear arguments in January and issue a decision next spring.

The lawsuit filed in November 1991 contends that the constitutional rights of children in poor localities in Virginia are being violated because less is spent on their education than in more-affluent areas.
