RELIGION BRIEFS

OUR LADY OF NAZARETH CATHOLIC CHURCH will mark its 80th anniversary on March 27, 1994. Instead of the several weekend Masses, the parish will celebrate with one service at 10 a.m. at the Roanoke Civic Center auditorium.

For many years, members worshiped in the Roanoke West End building now occupied by RAM House. They moved to 2505 Electric Road S.W. in 1976.

\ PRESBYTERIANS FOR HABITAT, a group of workers from several Roanoke Valley congregations, have dedicated the second house they have built over the past two years. It is at 904 Kellogg Ave. N.W.

\ GRETA EVANS, Roanoke TV personality, will be the speaker when Church Women United meet for World Community Day on Nov. 5.

"The Ecumenical Decade" will be the theme for the 10:30 a.m. gathering at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, 1837 Grandin Road S.W. Reservations for a $3.50 lunch after the meeting are needed by Nov. 1. Call 344-2103. Evans will be joined by a panel of other women.

\ ROANOKE CATHEDRAL OF PRAISE will have its last service at 1913 Williamson Road on Oct. 31. The building in which the Pentecostal Church of God group has worshiped for many years has been sold to Berglund Chevrolet.

Until a new building at 8100 Angel Lane in the Hollins area is completed in May 1994, services will be held at Roanoke Valley Worship Center, 1488 Peters Creek Road N.W. The first service in the temporary meeting place is scheduled on Nov. 3.

\ FAIRVIEW UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 1310 Van Buren St. N.W., has scheduled its 85th anniversary homecoming celebration Sunday. A former pastor, the Rev. Douglas Ebert, will preach at 11 a.m., with Sunday school starting at 9:45. For a luncheon at noon in the fellowship hall, meat will be provided but participants are asked to bring complementary foods.

\ A CANDLELIGHT MUSICAL SERVICE at First Baptist Church, 310 N. Jefferson St., will include singers from several Roanoke Valley churches on Sunday at 4 p.m. The board of deaconesses is sponsoring the service.

\ SUMMERDEAN CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN, 6604 Plantation Road, Hollins, will present a film, "The Eye of the Storm," Sunday night at 6. Refreshments will be included at the free showing, and child care will be provided.

\ A LEADERSHIP TRAINING SCHOOL is planned Oct. 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Hollins. Classes will be offered for Sunday school teachers and other church leaders and in youth evangelism. Call 366-2106 for more information.

\ HOMECOMING is scheduled Oct. 31 at Price Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, 506 15th St. N.W. Following morning worship, lunch will be served at 1:45 p.m. The Rev. Marvin Fields and the choir of Maple Street Baptist Church will lead worship at 3 p.m.

\ THE REV. ANDREA CORNETT-SCOTT will be welcomed as pastor of Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church at a reception Saturday at 6 p.m. at the church at 1563 Lafayette Blvd. N.W. Cornett-Scott moved to Roanoke in July from Harrisonburg.

\ MARANATHA FELLOWSHIP CHURCH, 2715 Green Ridge Road, has revival services in progress through Sunday. Services begin at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Kenneth Hughes of Hopedale, Ill. the guest preacher. Sunday services will be at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. A children's program is part of the series.

\ THE WILLIAMS MEMORIAL BAPTIST SENIOR CHOIR, at 2105 Carroll Ave. N.W., will celebrate its 15th anniversary with a special service Sunday at 3 p.m. The Rev. Antonio Thomas and the choir of Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church will lead the service.

\ SAMUEL TERRY JR., a deacon, and DARRICK L. EDWARDS, a William Fleming High senior, were honored recently at Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church. They were recognized during Men's Day for their leadership in the congregation.

\ THE REV. DOYAL SPENCE, minister of music at First Baptist Church in downtown Roanoke for more than 25 years, has been named Church Musician of 1993. The honor was given at the recent Virginia Baptist State Music Conference.

Spence is active in The Centurymen and the Virginia Baptist Male Chorale, singing groups that have traveled internationally.
