\ DAVID KILLIAN, an assistant actuary with Shenandoah Life Insurance Company of Roanoke, has been named an associate of the Society of Actuaries. He earned the ASA designation by successfully completing a series of examinations administered by the society.
\ THE ACHIEVEMENT CENTER, a school for children with learning disabilities in Roanoke, recently received a $5,000 grant from the Allstate Foundation. The grant will be used for equipment in the computer lab.
JO ANN B. WEISSBART, a Roanoke College graduate, has been awarded the designation of charted financial analyst. She is an equity analyst with Dixon, Hubard & Feinour Inc. Investment Counsel.
\ PAUL J. CURRAN, the Edward D. Jones & Co. investment representative in Salem, has become a limited partner of The Jones Financial Cos. Curran has been with the organization since 1987 and will continue serving Salem in his new capacity. The Jones Financial Cos. is the holding company for the St. Louis-based financial-services firm.
\ DONALD HELMS, senior manager of AVCO Financial Services' Roanoke No. 3, Virginia office, is a recipient of the American Financial Services Association's 1993 Merit Manager Award.
The award is presented annually to branch managers of association member companies who have demonstrated outstanding management skills and have translated those skills into company profits.
Helms joined AVCO in April 1989 and was promoted to manager of the Roanoke office in May 1991.
\ THOMAS A. MASON, independent agency manager of Allstate Insurance Company's Electric Road location, has been designated a certified insurance counselor. The distinction follows successful completion of an insurance education program sponsored by the Society of Certified Insurance Counselors.
\ WARREN M. ST. CLAIR of Botetourt County has been appointed an independent top-level distributor for System "48-Plus."
The Cromwell Organization of Delray Beach, Fla., which manufactures System "48-Plus," said St. Clair will direct sales of the chemical engine formula.
\ JAMES A. BERGER of Roanoke has become a member of the Presidential Winner's Circle for outstanding sales during the past 12 months with Mason Shoe.
\ GOODWILL INDUSTRIES TINKER MOUNTAIN INC. recently received two new computer systems from IBM Corp. to help start its Project Access computer training program for the physically impaired.
IBM is an active participant in the Projects with Industry link with Goodwill Inc., which is starting computer training programs as part of its vocational training nationwide, said Wanda Osburn, project coordinator for Project Access, which is funded by a grant with the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services.
The training program will be accredited by Virginia Western Community College.
\ THE HONEYTREE EARLY LEARNING CENTER is building an addition to it Lewis-Gale Hospital center.
The separate building will accommodate up to 120 school-age children and will be used as a recreational facility. The new building is scheduled to open in early 1994.
\ STEPHEN M. POWELL, son of Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Powell of Roanoke, has been elected banking officer at Wachovia Bank of North Carolina in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Powell, a retail training specialist, is a graduate of North Carolina State University and has been with Wachovia since 1988.
\ DR. PAUL M. SHOENFELD, a podiatrist practicing with Roanoke Podiatry and Foot Surgery, P.C., recently was elected president of the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine.
Shoenfeld has practiced in Roanoke for more than 15 years and has been a board member, treasurer and vice president of the American board. He also is past president of the Southwest Virginia Podiatric Medical Society.
\ BOB MURRAY, formerly of Troutville, has been named senior vice president and director of management for Regency Windsor Companies of Vero Beach, Fla.
Murray is responsible for 29 apartment communities and will oversee both area and residential managers in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Florida, Texas, North Carolina and Kentucky. Murray, son of Robert H. and Martha Murray, lives in Fort Wayne, Ind.
\ LAWRENCE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS INC., an agent for United Van Lines, has received Elizabeth Arden Inc.'s Household Movers of the Year award for the second year in a row. The award is given to the vendor who exceeds the company's expectations for quality service and teamwork.
\ F. COURTNEY HOGE, a New York Life Insurance agent in Roanoke, has been named to the Million Dollar Round Table's 1993-94 home office partnership task force committee. Hoge, a 21-year member of the Round Table, has been on two other committees of the organization.
\ DR. KAREN BOWEN DAHLE, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Jabbour of Roanoke, has been named director of Autism Services at Glenwood Mental Health Services, Inc. in Birmingham, Ala. Dahle, a graduate of Roanoke Catholic, formerly taught students with learning disabilities in Roanoke County.
