Mary Kay Brown, a teacher for the visually impaired with the Roanoke schools, got the idea for the project when she took a blind student on a field trip to the zoo. She noticed the student running her fingers over the smooth surface of the sign trying to feel what it read.
This prompted Brown to suggest the name plates to other members of the Blue Ridge Council of the Blind, so that other blind visitors can enjoy the exhibits.
