VIRUS COULD WORSEN WITH COLD WEATHER

The number of cases of an often fatal viral infection in the Southwest could soon rise as mice carrying the disease seek shelter inside from cold weather, health officials warned Wednesday.

The disease, first recognized five months ago in the Four Corners area of Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico, attacks the lungs and kills about two-thirds of its victims.

Officials are apprehensive about autumn, because an Asian version of the virus is most prevalent as winter approaches. - Associated Press
