GALAX RUNS TO DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP

Ricky Jennings of Giles won the boys' race in 17 minutes, 8 seconds but it wasn't enough as Galax's sixth runner broke a tie between the teams to help the Maroon Tide to its fifth straight Mountain Empire District cross country championship Wednesday.

Aaron Davis finished 17th on the 3.1-mile course, six places ahead of the Spartans' Derrick Fontaine. Jeffrey Ross, Arley Frantz and Jamar Bryson placed fourth, fifth and six consecutively to anchor Galax early in the race at the New River State Park Trail in Galax.

Defending champion Akemi Eisenhart of Floyd County set a course record of 21:35 in the girls' race, but Velvet Frances of Giles finished second in 22:57 and teammate Jennifer Jeffers was third in 22:59 as the Spartans won their third consecutive district crown.

Giles finished with 17 points and Shawsville was second at 50.

In other high school sports:

David Angell of Franklin County and Jennifer Pohlig of Pulaski County each set course records to claim the individual titles in the Roanoke Valley District cross country meet at Pulaski County High School.

Angell ran the 2.9-mile course in 15:45. Pohlig completed the race in 19:08.

With four of the top six finishes in the boys' race and six of the top 10 in the girls' race, defending champion Cave Spring easily reclaimed the titles.

The top three teams and top-15 runners in each race advance to the regional meet Oct. 28 in Charlottesville.

Stuart Bray of Northside and Kathy Reynolds of Alleghany were the individual winners of the Blue Ridge District cross country meet at Alleghany. William Byrd's boys and Alleghany's girls won the team titles.
