Pernell Whitaker's protest of a judge's scoring in his draw with Julio
Cesar Chavez in San Antonio last month has been withdrawn. Jack Garison, of
the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, which oversees boxing in the
state, said Whitaker's promoters "didn't have a legitimate complaint." A
complaint was filed based on remarks by British judge Mickey Vann after the
Sept. 13 WBC welterweight title bout. Vann had been quoted by London
newspapers as saying he took it upon himself to deduct a point from Whitaker
for a low blow.
