\ The Pittsburgh Pirates announced Wednesday that former Salem Buccaneers catcher Trent Jewett will be the Carolina League baseball team's manager in 1994.
Jewett replaces Scott Little, who was assigned to Class A Augusta in the South Atlantic League, where he managed in 1992. Little led the Buccaneers to a 61-79 record last season.
The Augusta (Ga.) Pirates had a 59-82 record under Jewett last season. Jewett managed the Welland (Ontario) Pirates of the New York-Penn League in 1992.
Bucs fans will remember Jewett as the backup catcher to Scott Barczi on the 1989 squad. Jewett played in 28 games and had a .150 batting average that season.
He returned to Salem midway through the 1991 season as a coach under manager Stan Cliburn.
Dave Rajsich will return for his second season as pitching coach for the Buccaneers.
The Pirates announced previously that Jewett's pitching coach in Augusta, Wayne Garland, had been promoted to Class AA Carolina of the Southern League.
The manager of the Mudcats will be former New York Yankees shortstop Bobby Meacham, who comes to the Pirates from the Colorado Rockies organization. He previously managed the Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League.
Former Salem manager John Wockenfuss, who managed Carolina last season, was dismissed at the end of the season.
In other staff changes, team trainer Bill "Tiny" Zick moves on after two seasons with the Buccaneers. He will be succeeded by Rod Lich, who has been with Augusta the past two years.
