DISASTER AID DENIED FOR BLIZZARD DAMAGE

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has denied the state's request for a disaster declaration for areas hit by severe winter storms March 12-13, Gov. Douglas Wilder said Wednesday.

Such a declaration is necessary for the state to receive additional federal aid.

President Clinton earlier approved $7.2 million in disaster aid for snow removal.

FEMA Director James Lee Witt notified Wilder by letter that the disaster declaration had been rejected.

Witt said many costs of the emergency, including law enforcement and search and rescue, are not eligible for reimbursement.
