REPORTED EARNINGS

Chesapeake Corp.

Chesapeake Corp., a Richmond-based forest products company operating Chesapeake Packaging Co. in Roanoke, announced third-quarter income of $2.6 million, or 11 cents a share, up from $1.3 million, or 5 cents a share, earned in the second quarter of 1993 and down from $6.5 million, or 28 cents a share, earned in the third quarter of 1992.

Sales for the quarter ended Sept. 30 were a record $238.3 million, up from $236.2 million during the third quarter of 1992.

\ Virginia First

Virginia First Savings Bank, a Petersburg-based thrift with offices in the Roanoke area, announced net earnings of $1.8 million, or 66 cents per share, for the quarter ended Sept. 30, an increase over the $1.7 million, or 63 cents per share, for the same period last year.

Virginia First reported total interest income of $10.1 million for the 1993 quarter.

\ Hershey Foods Corp.

Hershey Foods Corp., the Hershey, Pa., operator of a chocolate plant at Stuarts Draft and a pasta plant at Winchester, announced sales for the third quarter ended Oct. 3 of $935.7 million, compared with $827.5 million for the third quarter of 1992.

Net income was $73.9 million, or 82 cents per share, compared with $66.9 million, or 74 cents per share, for same quarter last year.

\ VF Corp.

VF Corp., the Wyomissing, Pa., parent of Bassett-Walker Inc. of Martinsville, announced record sales of $1.153 billion for the third quarter ended Oct. 2, compared with $1.125 billion in the 1992 quarter.

Net income for the quarter was $76.8 million, or $1.18 per share, compared with $76.6 million, or $1.29 per share, in the same period a year ago.

\ Fieldcrest Cannon

Fieldcrest Cannon Inc., an Eden, N.C.-based textile maker operating a towel mill in Henry County, announced income of $7.0 million, or 58 cents per share, for the quarter ended Sept. 30, compared with $5.8 million, or 48 cents per share, in the third quarter of 1992.

Net sales in the 1993 quarter were $256.7 million, up from $243.1 million in the 1992 quarter.

\ Amer. Electric Power

American Electric Power Co., the Columbus, Ohio-based parent of Appalachian Power Co., reported third-quarter 1993 earnings of $134.4 million, or 73 cents per share, compared with $107.8 million, or 58 cents a share, for the same period in 1992.

Revenues for the third quarter, which ended Sept. 30, were $1.406 billion, an increase over revenues of $1.282 billion in 1992.

Appalachian Power Co. of Roanoke reported operating revenues of $393.7 million in the third quarter, up 15 percent from $343.3 million a year earlier. Net earnings rose 22 percent to $27.7 million from year-earlier $22.7 million. The Apco unit does not report earnings per share.

\ USAir Group

USAir Group, the parent of USAir, an Arlington-based airline serving Roanoke Regional Airport, reported a third-quarter loss of nearly $178 million, compared with a loss of $106 million for the same quarter last year. The loss per share amounted to $3.33, compared with $2.51 for the third quarter of 1992.

Revenues for both quarters remained static at $1.7 million.

\ Bell Atlantic Corp.

Bell Atlantic Corp., the Philadelphia parent of C&P Telephone Co. of Virginia, reported third-quarter earnings of $378.5 million, or 87 cents per share, down from $386.6 million, or 90 cents per share, a year earlier.

Operating revenue for the quarter was $3.3 billion, up from $3.2 billion a year ago.
