Westmoreland Coal Co. of Philadelphia has put its Westmoreland Energy Inc. subsidiary up for sale, the company said Wednesday.
Westmoreland, whose Virginia headquarters are in Big Stone Gap in Wise County, is one of the state's largest coal producers but has been struggling financially recently.
Westmoreland Energy earlier was involved in an unsuccessful effort to build a coal-burning cogeneration plant in Buena Vista. The company holds an interest in eight cogeneration plants in the U.S.
Westmoreland Coal has retained Merrill Lynch to help find a buyer. Merrill Lynch is also helping Westmoreland review the possible divestment of some of its coal mining operations. - Staff report
