East-West Baseball Ambassadors, an Ohio-based, nonprofit organization, and the Doyle Baseball school will be in Roanoke to recruit baseball players between the ages of 11 and 19 for teams to travel this winter and next summer.
The national teams, separated by age and level of ability, will play teams in Europe, Asia, Australia, Cuba and Puerto Rico.
Roanoke is one of 160 sites across the country where this year's tryouts will be conducted. Sunday's session will be at Maher Field at Victory Stadium between 1 and 4 p.m. Registration begins at noon.
At least two officials from Doyle Baseball will be present to evaluate the participants. "In many ways, it will be just like a major league tryout," area representative Mike Morris said.
Morris has served as the organization's point man in this area. He has been in contact with more than 20 high school coaches and is looking for 50 to 75 of the region's best players to turn out.
Morris is an active, multisport sandlot coach and the father of three. He first learned about the East-West Ambassadors through his association with Doyle, a nationally recognized baseball training school.
All participants Sunday are asked to bring their own equipment. Candidates are required to pay a $35 fee which covers a 60-75 minute instructional period, the tryout and a formal evaluation.
If selected, players will be given literature to help determine their choice of trips. Players are responsible for paying a portion of their expenses, but East-West Ambassadors helps with the fund raising.
