In Group AA, the vote was 56-10 with 10 abstentions to keep playing girls' basketball in the fall. In Group A, it was 49-0 with one abstention.
The vote, taken at the VHSL's legislative council meeting in Charlottesville, was in direct conflict with a 1992 recommendation by the Governor's Commission to unify girls' basketball programs by having all three classifications play in the winter. Only Group AAA schools play girls' basketball in the winter.
The schools also voted 170-60 in favor of a motion to change the VHSL from a legislative form of government, under which each school has a vote, to an executive form of government. However, the recommended makeup of 27 members for the new executive committee was changed to 48 voting members. The committee would be made up of: two principals from each of 12 regions; a member of the state department of education; eight division superintendents; two representatives from the school board association; two state citizens; six supervisors of athletics; three coaches or sponsors of VHSL activities; and two members from the general assembly.
That change was passed by a voice vote. The entire motion must pass another reading in the spring to take effect.
The member schools also passed a motion to look at statewide classification for all groups. Group AA schools previously had said they would establish a committee to balance the regions in their classification.
Earl Gillespie, the VHSL's executive director, announced his retirement, effective July 31. A steering committee will advertise the position and seek a successor.
