FORT CHISWELL NIPS ROCKY GAP

Anesha Marshall sank a free throw with eight seconds left, and Rocky Gap lost possession of the ball for traveling on its final possesion as the Fort Chiswell edged the Eagles 48-46 in Mountain Empire District girl's basketball Thursday night.

Stephanie Felts led Fort Chiswell (7-9 overall, 7-7 district) with 16 points.

Rocky Gap's Christie Whitt led all scorers with 21 points. \

INDEPENDENCE - The Buffaloes bolted to a 34-14 lead at halftime and whipped the Blue Devils in a Mountain Empire District game.

Lynette Nolley had 13 points and Melissa Cantrell added 10 for Floyd County (15-1, 14-0).

Grayson County (2-14, 2-12) got 12 points from Tia Stuart.

LEXINGTON - The Vikings used a balanced offense to rout the Wildcats in the Blue Ridge District.

Jennifer Schmidt scored 12 points and Amy Heath, Michele Orlando and Kim Farrell added 10 each for Northside.

Sarah Dooley led Rockbridge County with seven points. \

COVINGTON - JoAnn Helton scored 24 points, and the Cougars used a box-and-one defense to frustrate the Rockets' Chrissy Robertson in a Pioneer District victory.

Charlee Laws dug in and held Robertson to nine points, well below her average, as Covington (6-9, 6-3) took control early. Bessy Laws added 14 points and Nancy Shawver scored 13 for the Cougars.

Bonnie Boardwine led Craig County (5-10, 5-4) with 10 points. \

Fieldale-Collinsville 68

Tunstall 33

COLLINSVILLE - T.J. Hayes led five players in double figures with 13 points as the Cavaliers swamped Tunstall in a Piedmont District game.

Yvonne Hall added 12 points, Monique Riley had 11, and Kia Isaac and Cicely Becker 10 each for Fieldale-Collinsville (8-8, 7-7). The Cavaliers led 39-11 at halftime.

BUENA VISTA - Stephanie Rhodes made two free throws with 19 seconds left as the Fighting Blues avoided an upset in the Pioneer District.

Rhodes had 14 points for Parry McCluer (9-6, 6-3), as did Misty Snider.

Highland (3-11, 1-8) got 11 points from Amy Arbaugh. The Rams outscored Parry McCluer 11-4 in the fourth quarter to move into position for the victory.

Buckingham 24

MONETA - The Golden Eagles (13-2, 13-2) surged to a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and cruised past the winless Knights in a Seminole District game. Deena Mitchell had a game-high 11 points and Courtney Hurd added 10 for Staunton River, which led 31-10 at halftime. No Buckingham player scored more than eight points. \
