BANKS POWERS BYRD PAST ALLEGHANY 73-69

Jackie Banks scored eight of her 16 points in the fourth quarter, and William Byrd went on to defeat Alleghany 73-69 on Thursday night in Blue Ridge District girls' basketball.

Cathy Smith and Kristi Dyer added 10 points each for William Byrd (12-4 overall, 5-1 in the district) as 10 Terriers scored.

Alleghany is 10-6 and 2-4. \

Northside 82

Rockbridge County 26

LEXINGTON - The Vikings used a balanced offense to rout the Wildcats in the Blue Ridge District.

Jennifer Schmidt scored 12 points and Amy Heath, Michele Orlando and Kim Farrell added 10 each for Northside.

Sarah Dooley led Rockbridge County with seven points. \

Covington 65

Craig County 36

COVINGTON - JoAnn Helton scored 24 points, and the Cougars used a box-and-one defense to frustrate the Rockets' Chrissy Robertson in a Pioneer District victory.

Charlee Laws dug in and held Robertson to nine points, well below her average, as Covington (6-9, 6-3) took control early. Bessy Laws added 14 points and Nancy Shawver scored 13 for the Cougars.

Bonnie Boardwine led Craig County (5-10, 5-4) with 10 points. \

James River 48

Bath County 17

HOT SPRINGS - Angie Johnson scored 14 points, and Kara Mundy added 12 as the Knights rolled over the host Chargers in a Pioneer District matchup.

James River (8-8, 6-2) jumped to a 21-8 halftime lead, and Bath County (3-13, 0-9) had problems holding onto the ball.\ see microfilm for box score
