CAVALIERS TOP SALEM

Lord Botetourt missed its first two and final two shots in the third quarter Thursday night.

In between those misses, the Cavaliers hit 10 of 15 field-goal attempts to blow away Salem 71-57 in a Blue Ridge District girls' basketball game.

The Cavaliers (16-1 overall, 6-0 in the Blue Ridge) also had two 3-point shots during the surge as they went up 56-37.

Ashley Moore, who led all scorers with 20 points for the Cavaliers, was shut out during the streak. But Jenny Gates, who had but one first-half basket, hit four of five attempts, including a 3-pointer.

"We've been playing together for so long, we know what to expect from everyone," said Botetourt point guard Laurie Ottaway, who had five assists and three steals. "We came out a little flat tonight, so we had to pump ourselves up during warmups."

David Wheat, the Cavaliers' coach, said, "It's easy to tell our 1-2 scorers [Moore and Gates], but it's not always easy to tell who will be our third-leading scorer."

In this case, Summer Plunkett outscored Gates 12-11 for second place, Marissa Michalski added eight and Molly McCorkle had six. Moore finished with 12 rebounds and went 8-for-16 from the floor.

The Cavaliers made only 13 of 33 field-goal attempts in the opening half but still led 34-22. Salem (9-7, 3-3) never led and found no consistent scorer other than Blue Ridge District leader Shellie Johnson, who had 10 of her 16 points in the opening half.

Surprisingly, the Spartans outrebounded Botetourt 43-38. Consider that the Cavaliers start two 6-footers - Gates and Moore - and Salem has no one standing taller than 5-9, and it shows the Cavaliers didn't do a good job of boxing out.

Botetourt did take care of the ball, committing only eight turnovers - three after the reserves were on the floor for both teams.

"They're so much stronger than us, but one of our goals was to outrebound them," said Dee Wright, the Spartans' coach. "We played better this time than we did at their place. But David has such consistent depth and we got tired."

For the game, Botetourt made 30 of 70 shots, showing how important the third quarter was. Salem made 23 of 54 and was led on the boards by Alison Mankie, who had nine rebounds.

Stacie White came off the bench to hit two 3-pointers for the Spartans late in the game.

"We've been trying to get her to shoot those shots, but she won't always do it," Wright said. \
