GENDER A BIG DEAL FOR YOUNG TERRY FANS

Mary Sue Terry doesn't say much about her gender, or the prospect of becoming the state's first female governor.

But it was on the minds of some of her young fans Thursday when she visited a school in Roanoke.

Fifth-grader Jessica Elliott gave Terry her class photo, and even signed it for her. "I hope she wins, because she'd be the first woman governor," Elliott said. "I think it would be very nice."

Meanwhile, parent Brooke Stephens brought her 6-year-old daughter, Mary, to meet Terry. "I want her to know that girls can grow up to do this," Stephens said. "Usually when you see politicians, they're men, and sometimes girls don't think they can do that, too."
