THE TIPOFF

SPEAKING OF MEXICO: The Ballet Gran Folklorico de Mexico will perform Wednesday night at 7:30 in Burruss Hall of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. It's a troupe of 15 dancers and soloists and 10 musicians who, they say, perform with emotion and flair. The costumes are pretty, too. Tickets are $14 for the general public. The group also will perform Monday night at 8 at Covington High School. Tickets for that performance are $15 or $12 for students. Call 962-6220.

PUCKY NIGHT: The Roanoke Express, the team that seems to have found a healthy market for ice hockey, will take on the Richmond Renegades tonight at 7:30 at the Roanoke Civic Center coliseum. They'll also have a number of promotions going, including ``puck night,'' in which 100 hockey pucks will be thrown to fans from the rink's Zamboni machine. It's sponsored by the Roanoke Times & World-News. The game wil be followed by a concert featuring Gail Bliss and the Lone Starlets in the civic center's exhibit hall. You can get in with a ticket stub from the game plus $2, or simply by paying $4.

SHINING PERFORMANCE: Music ranging from Bach and Handel to jazz and Broadway will be featured Monday night at 8 during the concert of the Empire Brass at Olin Theater of Roanoke College in Salem. The quintet perform more than 100 concerts per year in many major cities across the world. They are faculty quintet-in-residence at Boston University, and they've performed on many television programs, including ``Mr. Roger's Neighborhood.''

Tickets are $12 for general admission, $10 for senior citizens and students. Call 375-2333.

HOOFERS: The Royal Lipizzaner Stallions will prance their way into the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington on Thursday night at 7:30. They're a rare breed, noted for their showmanship. IN BRIEF: The Dutton Family will play Tuesday and Wednesday nights at 8 at Whitman Auditorium of Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke. Tickets are $7. Call 857-7334.

And No Strings Attached, the hammer dulcimer band, will play tonight at 7:30 at Talmadge Hall of Hollins College. The $5 admission will benefit Community School.

\ STRINGERS: Violinist Charles Castleman and violist Leonard Schranze will join the Kandinsky Trio for a concert Saturday night at 8 in Olin Theater of Roanoke College in Salem.

Tickets are $7.

Castleman has won top prizes in international musical competitions. Works by Haydn, Poulenc and Schumann will be featured.

ARMCHAIR TRAVEL: ``This is Israel'' is the title of the first show of the 35th season of the Travel and Adventure Film Series of the Kiwanis Club of Roanoke. It will be Sunday afternoon at 2:30 in the Roanoke Civic Center auditorium. Tickets, to be sold at the door, are $4 for adults and $2 for students age 18 and younger.

Howard and Barbara Pollard will provide live narration of a color film taking the viewers to Tel Aviv, Jaffa, Haifa and the Negev Desert, as well as Capernaum, Nazareth, Bethlehem and Jerusalem.
