Bankruptcies
Four petitions involving businesses in Western Virginia have been filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Virginia in Roanoke.
George W. Harris III of Aspen Street N.W., Roanoke, asked for reorganization and protection from creditors. He is a lawyer with an office on Starkey Road.
The only debt he listed was $8,500 for a vehicle for which he requested a repayment plan of $145 a month. Harris also faces trial on several bad check charges in Roanoke and Roanoke County.
James F. Hodges of Wynne Road S.W., Roanoke, asked for liquidation, listing assets of $296,306 and liabilities of $209,129. He is listed as self-employed in construction and real estate development and sales. Hodges listed two of his projects as Lake Associates and Tinkerview Townhouses.
Thomas Edward Hughes of Big Stone Gap also asked for liquidation. He trades as Hughes Maintenance and Remodeling and as B&B Custom Cabinets. He estimated both assets and liabilities at less than $50,000.
Gary Randal and Rita H. Longworth asked for liquidation. He said he is self-employed and she said she is a bookkeeper and fund raiser. They showed assets of $21,145 and liabilities of $1,334,480. - Staff report

Signet Banking Corp. has raised its quarterly dividend by 5 cents a share or by 25 percent. The new dividend of 25 cents a share brings the annual rate to $1 a share. It will be payable Nov. 24 to shareholders on Nov. 3.
General Motors Corp. and the UAW will resume bargaining this morning after nearly eight hours of talks Friday failed to resolve their differences.
