BULLDOGS NIP BENGALS 7-0

Martinsville held Bassett on fourth downs from the 1-yard line in the closing minutes to hold on for a 7-0 Piedmont District football victory Friday night.

Senior Nakia Townsend ran 16 yards for a touchdown on Martinsville's first possession and the Bulldogs (7-0 overall, 6-0 district) drove deep into Bassett territory on several occasions but could not add to their lead.

Freshman Manti Venable had 21 carries for 99 yards for the Bulldogs before leaving with an injury in the second quarter. Townsend rushed 10 times for 70 yards for Martinsville, which had 211 of its 261 yards on the ground.

Bassett (3-4, 3-3) passed for 182 of its 254 yards.

Martinsville linebacker Chris Frith had two tackles and a pass deflection on the goal-line stand. \

Fieldale-Collinsville 16

RIDGEWAY - Senior Rodney Redd set the tone by returning the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown as the unbeaten Warriors downed the Cavaliers (2-4, 2-3) in a Piedmont District game.

Redd also rushed for a touchdown and returned an interception for another score as Magna Vista (7-0, 6-0) ranked No. 1 in The Associated Press Group AA poll.

RURAL RETREAT - Shane Cassell blocked an extra-point kick by Andrew Hockett with 2 1/2 minutes left to preserve one-point lead for the Indians and give them a Hogoheegee District win over the Rebels.

Rural Retreat (5-2, 3-2) took a 21-14 lead in the third quarter, but PH-Glade Spring pulled to two points down with a 5-yard run from Brandon Jackson. Cassell blocked the kick by Andrew Hockett, who had successfully completed two other attempts, to stave off the rally.

Burton had 26 carries for 156 yards, and Childers carried 18 times for 105 yards for Rural Retreat.

Brandon Jackson had 17 carries for 96 yards to lead PH-Glade Spring (4-3, 2-3). \

Covington 0

The Highlanders (2-5, 2-1) used a strong running game and a stifling defense to blank the visiting Cougars (0-7, 0-2) in a Pioneer District game.

Mike Stanley ran for two touchdowns, and Eric East rushed for 136 yards on 21 carries to lead the Highlanders.

Glenvar shut down Covington's offense, holding the Cougars to 64 yards and four first downs.

NEW CASTLE - Shaam Wheeler carried 16 times for 132 yards and Jon Wheeler had 13 rushing attempts for 118 yards as the Fighting Blues (6-1, 2-0) ran over the Rockets (0-7, 0-2).

Parry McCluer amassed 403 yards in total offense, 372 on the ground.

Craig Floyd had 12 carries for 83 yards for the Fighting Blues.

Craig County kept Parry McCluer scoreless until the second quarter. \

HOT SPRINGS - Billy Thomas rushed for two touchdowns to spark the unbeaten Chargers to the non-district victory over the Gladiators.

Thomas, a junior tailback, carried 13 times for 141 yards and scored runs of 1 and 58 yards for Bath County (7-0), ranked No. 8 in The Associated Press' Group A poll. Sophomore Jamie Carroll rushed eight times for 62 yards.

Riverheads (3-4) had one pass intercepted and lost four fumbles. \
