AUTO RACING-BIG FIELD GROWING AT NRV TRACK

A former Winston Racing Series national champion is the latest driver to enter today's Southwest Virginia Chevy Dealers 300, the biggest Late Model Stock race in New River Valley Speedway history. Charlie Powell of Summerville, S.C., the 1989 title-holder, has become the 65th entry for the final event of the year at the Radford track.

The longest and richest race ever at the NASCAR-sanctioned .416-mile oval begins at 3 p.m. Drivers will be racing for the $6,500 first prize in the 250-lap main event. The total purse for the day, which includes a 50-lap Limited Sportsman race, is $32,000.

Gates open at 9 a.m., with practice at 11 a.m. Qualifying begins at 1:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $1 for children 12 and younger.

Fans driving to the next-to-last day of racing at Franklin County Speedway this season will have to take a slight detour to the track today.

Because of construction on Virginia 779, fans driving to Callaway are asked to travel via Virginia 919 and 641. The 919 turnoff, just south of Boones Mill on U.S. 220, is clearly marked.

Gates open at noon, and the first race on a double-points night begins at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, and there is no charge for children younger than 10.
