NORTH CROSS, CARDWELL TRAMPLE HARGRAVE 50-22

Marcus Cardwell rumbled for 214 yards and three touchdowns as North Cross whipped Hargrave Military Academy 50-22 in a Virginia Independent Conference football game Friday afternoon.

The Raiders (7-0 overall, 4-0 in the VIC) rolled up 331 yards rushing.

Cardwell scored on runs of 19, 5 and 3 yards, and Monty Smith ran for 98 yards and one touchdown as the Raiders, ranked first among Division I private schools in Virginia, took a 28-0 lead.

Hargrave (2-5, 0-4) matched North Cross with 22 points in the second half, but the Tigers were unable to overcome the first-half deficit. \

NEW CASTLE - Shaam Wheeler carried 16 times for 132 yards and Jon Wheeler had 13 rushes for 118 yards as the Fighting Blues (6-1, 2-0) ran over the Rockets (0-7, 0-2).

Parry McCluer amassed 403 yards in total offense, 372 on the ground.

Craig Floyd had 12 carries for 83 yards for the Fighting Blues.

Craig County kept Parry McCluer scoreless until the second quarter. \

Covington 0

The Highlanders (2-5, 2-1) used a strong running game and a stifling defense to stop the visiting Cougars (0-7, 0-2) in a Pioneer District game.

Mike Stanley ran for two touchdowns, and Eric East rushed for 136 yards on 21 carries to lead the Highlanders. Glenvar held the Cougars to 64 yards and four first downs.

MONETA - A late touchdown and successful onside kick gave the Golden Eagles hope for their first victory, but Nelson County intercepted a pass with a little more than two minutes remaining to clinch the Seminole District victory.

Staunton River (0-7, 0-7) led 8-0 after a 9-yard touchdown run by Derek Barnes, but the Governors (1-6, 1-6) seemingly had the game under control after taking a 22-8 lead in the fourth quarter.

Jeff English's 4-yard touchdown run with 2:43 left cut the deficit to six points.

\ Cumberland 20

James River 0

BUCHANAN - Lewis Hicks scored two touchdowns and had all 86 of Cumberland's receiving yards as the Dukes defeated the Knights in a non-district game.

Freshman tailback Wesley Cox was the leading rusher for James River (1-6), with 83 yards on 13 carries.

With 7 1/2 minutes to play and the Dukes leading 12-0, Cox ran 43 yards to the Cumberland 1-yard line and fumbled into the end zone. The Dukes recovered for a touchback.

Cumberland (5-2) put the game out of reach when Lionel Scruggs connected with Hicks on a 12-yard touchdown pass.

\ Franklin County 28

Halifax County 22

ROCKY MOUNT - John Muse's 51-yard touchdown run with 4:31 remaining lifted the Eagles to the non-district victory over the Comets.

After Halifax County went ahead 22-21, the Eagles (2-5) took four plays to go 64 yards for the game-winning score.

Halifax County (0-7) took the ensuing kickoff and drove to the Franklin County 24, but time ran out.

Tailback Stacy Helms carried 25 times for 131 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Eagles. Muse finished with 74 yards on 12 carries.

Avery Williams had two touchdown runs for Halifax County. \
