OBIT PRUNTY, WILLIAM CANTER
PRUNTY, William Canter, ("Bill"), 72, of Salem, passed away Thursday,
October 21, 1993, in a local hospital. He was retired from the Roanoke County
School system, where he taught at Carver High School and Northside High
School. Coach Prunty was very popular with his students. He received his
undergraduate degree from Virginia Union Unversity, Richmond, and his Master's
degree from V.P.I. As a football player in college, he was all C.I.A.A. He was
often an "official" for local games. He was a member of the Omega Psi Phi
Fraternity, where he was recently honored for 50 years of service. He was also
a Continental Guy with the Roanoke Continentals. A veteran of World War II, he
served in the Army. He leaves to mourn his passing his beloved wife, Laverne
C. Prunty; two brothers, John E. Prunty and theRev. Dr. Alfred S. Prunty; one
sister, Mrs. Dorothy P. Brown, Midlothian; four sisters-in-law, Mrs. Laverne
H. Prunty, Mrs. Edna B. Prunty, Mrs. Eleanor Prunty and Mrs. Frances Pearl
Prunty; nieces, nephews, and friends. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m.
Monday at Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church, with the Rev. Antonio Thomas
officiating. Burial will be in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive
friends 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel.
