Police said a real estate employee checking for repair work found the body of John Oakey Page, 38, of Staunton Avenue Northwest lying on the ground at the rear of a house at 1724 Melrose Ave.
Rescue personnel discovered a stab wound on Page's neck near the shoulder.
Police officers responded to a burglary attempt at 1712 Melrose at 1:20 a.m. Saturday. The officers were told Page had arrived at the house looking for a former girlfriend. As a man inside the house watched through a peephole in the door, Page backed up and kicked the door, breaking the frame.
Police reported the man then had a brief struggle with Page, who left the house a short time later.
The woman identified as the victim of the burglary attempt has been located by police, but her name was not released Saturday. The name of the man who fought with Page also was not released.
Dr. David Oxley, chief deputy medical examiner for Western Virginia, said Saturday that Page's autopsy results will not be available until Monday.
Police have not placed any charges, pending completion of an investigation.
