Bogner, who lives in Blacksburg, competes in whitewater slalom kayaking at a national level.
Last month, Bogner finished seventh in the slalom and fourth in the downriver competition at the U.S. Whitewater National Championships in western Massachusetts. Those were the best combined finishes by any American competitor.
The performance earned Bogner a spot on the elite Valley Mill Racing Team. That will give Bogner a chance to train in an attempt to qualify for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
Bogner qualified for the national team in Vail, Colo., in May. She finished 13th and sixth in her two races in the International Whitewater Series. And Bogner won a Bronze medal for her individual and team performances at the Olympic Festival in San Antonio, Texas, in July.
And Bogner accomplished all of this in a year she had not planned to compete after just missing the national team at the 1992 Olympic Trials in Maryland.
\ VOLLEYBALL: One of the Main Street Baptist teams in Christiansburg helped the other take the lead in the Church B League. Main Street I (11-1) swept a three-game match from Cambria Baptist II. Meanwhile, Main Street II took three from previously unbeaten St. Paul III.
The week wasn't all bad for St. Paul teams though. St. Paul II (14-1) went 3-0 to maintain its big lead in the Church A League.
In Radford, the Jetsetters (7-1) lost for the first time but still are atop the Co-Ed League standings. But Athlete's Choice (5-1) and Side Out (5-1) also have only one loss in the tight race.
\ SOFTBALL: In the Christiansburg Men's League, Ken & Barb's (5-1) swept a pair from Shelor Country Coaches, 25-3 and 15-11, to move one-half game in front of idle Southern Classic Car Wash (4-1).
\ BASKETBALL: The two "First Baptist" teams stayed unbeaten in the Radford League. Both First Baptist and Zion Hill-First Baptist have identical 4-0 records.
\ TENNIS: Top Gun (4-0) continued to be the top gun in Radford's Ultra Slim Fast Team Tennis League. SUSAN COX won handily in both Top Gun victories while BRIAN HILL teamed with SUSAN TEEL against Net Set and with Cox versus the Bulldogs for a pair of wins at mixed doubles.
\ UPCOMING: Registration begins Nov. 1 for the Men's Adult Fastbreak Basketball League in Blacksburg. The entry fee is $220 per team, plus $10 per nonresident (maximum of three nonresidents per team and proof of residency is required). The forfeit fee is $20.
The A League will play Monday night, the B League Wednesday night. The roster limit is 12 players. For more information, call the town's recreation department at 961-1149.
