CIA DIRECTOR DECLINES TO MEET ON NOMINEE

CIA Director James Woolsey, under last-minute directions from the White House, declined Tuesday to meet with three senators on a controversial Defense Department nominee, lawmakers said.

Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss, and two members of the Senate Intelligence committee, Dennis DeConcini, D-Ariz., and John Warner, R-Va., were scheduled to meet with Woolsey to discuss the nominee, Morton Halperin.

Lott and several Republicans on the Armed Services Committee contend that the CIA has documents regarding meetings that Halperin allegedly held overseas, sources familiar with the situation said. The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, declined to specify with whom Halperin is supposed to have met or when.
