CHRISTIANSBURG TURNS BACK TAZEWELL 60-56

Rebecca McNeil scored 23 points and Maureen Jackson added 11 Tuesday night as Christiansburg held on to edge Tazewell 60-56 in a non-district girls' basketball game.

Christiansburg (8-9) trailed by four points before McNeil scored seven in the second quarter and four in the beginning of third to break the game open. The Bulldogs rallied in the last quarter but the Demons used free throws to hold onto the lead.

Starr Anderson scored 18 points and Shonda Wilson chipped in 14 for Tazewell.

\ Blacksburg 53\ Graham 26

BLACKSBURG - Lisa Price scored 12 points and Mary Thorn added 11 including a trio of 3-point goals as the Indians routed Graham in a non-district game.

Blacksburg is 16-1 and Graham is 6-12.

\ Rocky Gap 68\ Giles 49

ROCKY GAP - Freshman Amanda Clark had career highs of 20 points and 17 rebounds, and three other Rocky Gap players scored in double figures as the Eagles ran away from Giles in a Mountain Empire District game.

Christie Whitt scored 17, Nancy Tupper chipped in 13, and Angel Garcia had her first double-figure game with 10 for Rocky Gap (9-9 overall, 8-7 in the district). Tamika Saunders led Giles (5-10 in the district) with 14 points.

\ Auburn 43\ Galax 38

GALAX - Angie Simpkins had 24 points to lead the Eagles to a Mountain Empire District victory.

Auburn (11-6, 10-5) gained control by outscoring Galax 18-10 in the third quarter.

Tammy Cox led Galax (10-7, 10-5) with 19 points and Jaclyn Dickens added 13.

\ James River 70\ Craig County 32

BUCHANAN - Teresa Hickman scored 23 points to lead the Knights over the Rockets in a Pioneer District game.

James River (9-8, 7-2) used a balanced scoring attack to roll past Craig County. The Knights got 11 points from Angie Johnson and 10 each from Laura Cook and Camille Arbogast.

Chrissy Robertson scored 18 to lead the Rockets (4-12, 3-7).

\ Shawsville 75\ Bland 9

SHAWSVILLE - Kelley Ryan scored 15 points and Brandy Alexander and Amy Roberts chipped in 10 each as the Shawnees handed the Rockets their 17th loss.

Robin Burnette grabbed 15 rebounds and LaVonda Franklin had nine for Shawsville (11-6, 11-4) during the Mountain Empire contest.

Bland is 0-17, 0-15.

\ Floyd County 77\ Fort Chiswell 44

MAX MEADOWS - Lynette Nolley and Leigh Ann Pursiful scored 14 points each as the Buffaloes stomped the Pioneers to remain unbeaten in the Mountain Empire District.

Pursiful had 11 points in the second quarter as Floyd County (16-1, 16-0) outscored Fort Chiswell 26-11 to take a 42-17 halftime lead.

With 10 points, Amber Gunter was the Pioneers' lone double-digit scorer. Fort Chiswell is 7-10, 7-8.

\ Narrows 49\ Grayson County 37

NARROWS - Melinda Fleeman scored 13 of her 26 points in the fourth quarter and snagged 13 rebounds for the game as Narrows overpowered the visitors from Grayson County in a Mountain Empire District game.

Melissa Lawrence added 14 points and 10 assists for the Green Wave (8-9 overall, 7-8 in the district). Tia Stuart paced Grayson County (2-17 overall, 2-15 in the district) with 19 points.
